10:35 Champlain College Visits

We’ll head over to GAWD program to hear a presentation from Champlain. A good audience listens and may even have a question or two. You are a good audience, so plan a question or two.

11:20 Halloween Project Loop

Use this window to check in with your team. Review the deliverables – everyone on the team should know what the deliverables are. If you don’t know, it is up to you to know. Everyone is pulling in the same direction as you are all going to be evaluated together. Check Google Classroom if you don’t know what is due for this project. Don’t be surprised when I ask you what the deliverables are for the team project you are part of.

12:25 After Effects – Lower Thirds – A Motion Graphic Designer’s Job

Lower Thirds are also referred to as L3s. Essentially a lower third is a non-intrusive motion graphic that displays necessary information such as name, place, fact or process. You may consider some details like:

  • Typography
  • Animation
  • Shape
  • Color

Always consider how the L3 blends with the content it is displayed with. Design does matter!

Helvetica, Lato and most Sans Serif fonts look best. Take time to find the right fonts.

A matte in After Effects is a layer that’s used to control the visibility of another layer beneath it. Mattes can be still images, videos, graphics, text, or shapes. They’re used to create transparency, which allows the layer beneath to show through. Alpha Matte, Luna Matte and Track Matte.

Did you know that some people make these for a living? Have a look at many of the lower thirds you can buy. Motion graphic templates are big business. Good thing we know how to make our own.

Lower Thirds Project: Create a visually compelling and unique lower third that could be used to introduce a fictional expert, character, game boss, etc…. Ideally you have some video footage! I used a still image above

    • Graphic Elements (at least one custom shape or vector graphic to support design
    • Animation (L3 must transition smoothly onto screen using at least three animated properties (position, scale, opacity, rotation, masking, trim paths..
    • Animation must hold onto the screen for moment
    • Animation must transition on the screen smoothly and off the screen
