10:12 After Effects – Animators

Text animators animate character position, rotation, and size-related properties relative to an anchor point.

Let’s play with some text effects using AE. Text in AE is vector.

Animating text with animators and selectors consists of three basic steps:

  1. Add an animator to specify which properties to animate.
  2. Use a selector to specify how much each character is affected by the animator.
  3. Adjust the animator properties.
  • There are several properties for text that can be animated:
    • Anchor Point of the text
    • Postion, Scale, Rotation, Skew, Opacity
    • Fill Color (RGB, Hue, Saturation)
    • Stroke Color (RGB, Hue, Saturation)
    • Tracking (space between characters)
    • Line Anchor
    • Line Spacing
    • Character Offset
    • Character Value
    • Blur
  • Each animator group includes a default selector (which happens to be range).
    • Start: Sets where the selection begins. Setting this to 0% starts the effect at the very first letter.
    • End: Sets where the selection finishes. Setting this to 100% reaches the last letter.
    • Offset: Shifts the entire selected range left or right along the text without changing the size of the selection window. Animating the offset creates a sliding wave effect.
  • You can replace the default selector, add additional selectors to an animator group, and remove selectors from a group.

1:25 Photography – Manual Mode

We are going to do some camera work outside in Manual mode. Manual allows us to control Aperture, Shutter and ISO. We have decisions to make when taking pictures – this is the creative part. No matter what, we want to have properly exposed images that are in focus.

New Photo Assignment: Street Photography

At the core, Street/Documentary Photography is spontaneous and captures activity as it is happening. Unscripted and interesting. Emotions, action, interesting camera angles.

Walker Evans, Robert Frank, David Alan Harvey, Helen Levitt

Capturing good Street Photography can be a lot tougher than it seems. First, you have to be bold enough to shoot candid images of people on the street, most times without their permission. Secondly, good street photography images requires photographers to be looking for powerful street photography images that captured an emotion or told a story; not just random shots of people walking down the street.

Shoot lots of images for this assignment. Select your favorite 5. and delete the rest.  Capture the activity around you.  Street Photography is unscripted!  Have your camera ready. Take a trip into your town. You’ve got a week, plan well. Maybe you can get your Urban photo for the Long Term assignment while you are at it. 30 – 60 minutes in your town or in Burlington should give you enough for this assignment. Maybe there is a farmer’s market in your town, concert on a green, apple orchard to visit – capture spontaneous moments – it’s the core of this assignment.

You may want to play around with tones like B&W, sepia and / or do some selective editing or masking.

  • Create a five slide presentation with your images on Black or white backgrounds
  • Include Metadata(aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
