A collection of really nice long exposure photography.

Let’s talk strategy…

ShotGoalSettingsTips
Silky WaterTurn a rushing stream or waterfall into smooth glass while rocks and trees stay crispManual mode (M), ISO 100, aperture around f/8 to f/11, shutter speed 1 to 5 secondsLook for water flowing over multiple levels of rocks, timer and tripod to prevent shake, watch for overexposure
Urban Light StreaksCapture vibrant ribbons of red and white light from car head and taillights against a static city street or highway bridge or dark country roadISO 100, aperture around f/8 to f/16 for deep focus, shutter speed 5 to 20 seconds (adjust based on traffic speed)Shoot during “blue hour” (right after sunset) so the sky retains a rich blue tone instead of pure black as a creative option, but night can be good too! We are running out of light in Vermont
Ghost Town PeopleMake a crowded public area or sidewalk look completely empty (or ghostly) by blurring moving people into transparencyISO 100, narrow aperture f/16, shutter speed 15 to 30+ secondsAnyone standing completely still for the whole exposure will remain visible, while anyone walking past will vanish
Light PaintingDraw shapes, glowing orbs, or abstract lines in total darkness using a small flashlight, LED wand, or sparklerISO 100, aperture f/8, shutter speed 15 to 30 seconds (or Bulb mode)Wear dark clothing so you don’t show up on camera while moving through the scene
Drifting CloudsTransform flat, stationary skies into streaked, dramatic brushstrokes across a landscape ISO 100, aperture f/11 shutter speed 30 to 60 seconds (or longer using Bulb mode)Look for windy days when mid-level or high-level clouds are moving quickly
