Animation

The Inconvenient Portal

Overview:  A character is trying to get from Point A to Point B, but a second character (“a mischievous helper”) keeps opening new portals that lead to inconvenient or ridiculous locations.

Constraints:  The animation must end exactly where it started (a “loop” feel)

Characters: At least two where one character is “Goal Oriented” and the other character is the “Chaos” one

Judging: Criteria will be based primarily on the Principles of Animation with visual effects and sound effects secondary.

Scaffolding: Each week your team will tackle a project milestone with a set of deliverables. The goal will be to show your progress and development each week. A good plan is essential!

Time: This is your final prompt. You will have until April 16th

Week 26 Milestone and Deliverables

To be submitted on Friday – April 3rd (11:40am) to your Week 26 Folder:

  1. First Looks (video): Your First Looks animation will be moving on from the Animatic phase. The shift for the viewer will be from not just “what happens” but also “how it feels”. Here is a breakdown of what should be in your First Looks Video this week:
    • The Three-Jump Rule: At least three distinct portal transitions are animated (even if they are still “rough”). Many animation teams need more story – so more portals.
    • Material Application: Characters, models and environments should have their primary colors, textures, or “materials” applied. No more “gray-box” worlds!
    • Audio Sync: Sound effects (SFX) for the portal opening/closing and character reactions must be synced to the keyframes.
    • The “Mischievous” Factor: Is it clear that the second character is causing the chaos?

  2. Create a feedback form. Seek feedback on your first looks video from 2-3 people who are not in GAWD program. You might select people from Student Services and Mx.Yopp if you seek professional responses.
  3. Executive Producers Complete the Self Evaluation Rubric. All team members sign off. Hand to Mr. Bohmann on Friday before the share-outs. I have paper copies.

Use these questions as the bare minimum, although you may consider more questions. On Friday, provide a summary of your feedback and how you plan to address it.
    Filename: FeedbackSummary.pdf
QuestionRating (1-5)Comments/Suggestions
Storyline: Is the story clear?
Clarity: Was it clear why the portals were appearing?
Visual Style: Do the materials and colors fit the mood of the story?
Sound Sync: Did the audio cues match the visual action perfectly?
The “Mischievous” factor: Was it clear that the second character was choosing to mess with the first?

Other questions you might ask…
What was the most “ridiculous portal” location visited?
One specific thing that felt “clunky” or confusing:
Do the characters have an emotional feel?

On Friday – Each Team’s Executive Producer/Director will share your teams Feedback as well as a viewing of your first looks video.
