We’ll be meeting in the GAWD 1 room for an overview of administrative policies from our CTE Admin Rich Wright. When we finish, we’ll look at your Week 3 Agencies, so be sure to have your agency ready to share with renders, screenshots, video, whatever you need to show us your work.

LTA – Long Term Assignment

Details: 10 Photos that capture Vermont during foliage (maybe Vermont’s finest season)

Vermont is beautiful this time of year. People pay good money just to come to the state and drive around looking at the changing colors, wander through quaint shops and reflect on small town life.

How lucky are we, we live here!

The goal of this assignment is simple. Capture Vermont during foliage. You will use your very best skills as a budding photographer to build a very nice portfolio of images that is unmistakably Vermont.

Requirements: 10 photos showing Vermont color & the following:

Tree/s
Farm, farm tools, farm equipment
Landscape
Macro (that’s a close up)
Urban color
Some kind of water (river, pond, lake, waterfall)
A Sign or Only in Vermont kind of thing
Your Choice 1
Your Choice 2
Your Choice 3

Google Doc – Description Contact Sheet: Every photo will have:

Shot Description (landscape, urban color, choice 1)
A unique Title
Description that discusses the location or meaning behind the photo
Metadata (like shutter, aperture, time)
This is a great example and will earn you full points!

Organization & Deliverables:

Description Contact Sheet (see above) – make with Google Docs
Slideshow with 10 photos (all converted to jpegs) (your choice on publishing – there are many options and we’ll cover some options in class)

You have full access to tripods and the cameras. This is a long term assignment.

Do not keep cameras in your car or in an unsecured location. These are expensive pieces of equipment. Please take good care of them. If you ruin your camera, we do not have a backup for you.

12:25 Composition Photography

The Rule of Thirds is a visual composition guide that says you should imagine a grid of two equally spaced horizontal and vertical lines on your images that creates nine boxes. According to the Rule of Thirds, you compose your images with subjects of interest at the points where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect. This negative space is considered good practice for creating visual tension and drawing the eye across the photo.

However, all rules are meant to be broken (but not the Gawd2 class rules of course)

The Phi Grid (Golden Ratio variation) is similar to the Rule of thirds, however the center is squeezed both vertically and horizontally to make a tighter center. Again this is just a strategy to apply when composing your shots. The Phi Grid is best used for landscapes.

A third compositional technique is the Golden Ratio. The Phi Grid is actually an easier version of the Golden Ratio. The idea behind this technique is to create balance. Based on the Fibonacci sequence (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21). The ratio is 1 : 1.618. This creates the spiral pattern we find in nature.

The golden spiral or Fibonacci spiral curves up from the corner of the largest square to the opposite corner, then continues curving into each smaller square. When all put together it forms a logarithmic spiral similar to what you might see on a snail shell.

Assignment: Using the rule of thirds or the phi grid, golden ratio, capture one photo from each category. Pay close attention to Composition, proper exposure and make sure your images are in Focus! You may shoot in Automatic, Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority modes. You may shoot in RAW or jpeg. You decide. If you are not sure, let’s talk. It is perfectly ok to have questions. That’s why I am here!
