Welcome to Week Two
Intro to Drawing is scheduled for Friday at CCV let’s cover some details:
- Meet in the EHS HS lobby by 9:45. We will leave by 9:55 and you don’t want to miss the bus. Talk with morning teachers now
- CCV Class on Friday means you will be late for regular lunch, you will fill out this lunch form every week by Wednesday to order your lunch. If you bring a lunch, order one anyway.
- We’ll give you your supplies for the first day
- If you need a snack, bring one or bring some money for the vending machine

11:00 Color Isolation – Image Manipulation

Selective color editing is a powerful technique that allows you to highlight specific colors within an image while converting the rest of the scene to black and white or desaturated tones.

By isolating certain colors and removing we can create visually striking images that draw attention to specific or certain elements. Doing so can communicate a particular mood or feeling.

Selective color editing is commonly used in fashion photography, conceptual art, and storytelling to make subjects stand out, create emphasis, or establish a visual narrative.

I’ve written up the process. Make a copy for your reference.

Color Isolation Assignment – Due Monday, September 15th

Using Three of your own photos, find a subject to isolate. Edit and adjust your photo as you see fit. Then, when ready, isolate your subject and push the color and/or adjustments. Make it interesting and attractive.

Save each image as a jpeg in your files.

For final display, create a Slideshow with each image taking up the majority of the slide or the whole slide. If you don’t use the whole slide, make sure the background is set to white or black and your image is centered!

12:25 Agency Projects in GAWD2 – Let’s Unpack the concept

One of the best things about technical high school is the access you have to technology, equipment and expertise in your field of study. Also, you get to make some really cool stuff.

Agency Projects (or story of 20%) goes back to 3M. (3M makes scotch tape, sticky notes and piles of other things that stick). Art Fry, a scientist at 3M had an idea to put an adhesive on the back of a piece of paper. The goal was to create a bookmark that was not permanent. He called it a Post-It-Note. Fry came up with the idea during 3M’s 15% time, which was time during the workday to explore rainbows and unicorns. Actually it was time that could be used to hatch their own ideas. Google later adopted a similar policy – calling it 20% time. Gmail is just one example of a passion project that came from Google’s 20% time. Google no longer does 20% time. But GAWD Does! – You know it as Agency work.

Each week, there is production time in the afternoon and post CCV class on Fridays. These are good times to work on your Agency projects.

Agency Projects are not limited to what we are currently doing in class. If you want to explore environmental lighting in Unity, create laser cats in After Effects or explore f curves in Blender, it’s up to you. Become the expert in your area of interest.

Each week, like your agencies last year in GAWD, I’ll ask you to share your learning and the progress of your work. Your agency projects do not have to be “one off” quickie items. It can be a path /documentation of learning and we see improvement and development over time (or it can be a one and done).

For example – let’s say you are working on modeling skills in Blender or learning how to use geometry nodes. On the share out day (Mondays) a good presentation would include:

Renders of your models or a live example(s)
A list of resources you used to help you (Tutorials, authors, links)
Techniques you learned that you’d like us to know about
What you want to work on next or what’s next on your learning path

Another example – let’s say you love cars and photography. Your agency project might include building a portfolio of work, learning techniques on how to take good automotive photos, practicing those photos by attending car shows / rallys. On the share out day, you might show us your progress:

A portfolio of your work so far
Techniques you learned
Resources you used to assist you / people you spoke with or worked with
Types of equipment you used
A sharable tip for the rest of us
What you plan to do next on your learning path

Presenting work to each other is not only educational but also a great way to practice and improve your speaking skills. Have a growth mindset, don’t let your insecurities define you.
