10:10 Extemporaneous Public Speaking Practice

As we move farther through May and June we will practice some public speaking activities to get you ready for the real world.

We will be looking for volunteers first. Then we move to voluntold.

Today I am starting with Lion and Sebastian. Each is going to come up and get their topic.

They have different topics and have to pick one side or the other to argue for. Then the second person HAS to argue the opposite, even if they don’t really believe it. Until the speech starts, only the first person knows each topic. That gives them an advantage, where the second speaker REALLY has to think on their toes.

First Lion will speak on his topic for 60 seconds, why he believes one way or another. Then Sebastian has to go immediately in rebuttal (60 seconds), whatever Lion says and believes Sebastian has to argue in the opposite position.

The Sebastian does will do the same for his topic.

This has nothing to do with what you believe necessarily, just the message you have to spin.

It will go:

  • Lion for his cause (60 seconds)
  • Sebastian against Lion’s cause (60 seconds)
    • Break – breath. Laugh.
  • Sebastian for his cause (60 seconds)
  • Lion against Sebastian‘s cause (60 seconds)

This will work on public speaking, lobbying and persuading someone, thinking on your feet without much time. In essence, you are practicing life.

10:30 Game UI with a focus on Accessibility

This week you are going to have a chance to combine a lot of our GAWD classwork into a coherent project. We are going to look at Game UI usability in a similar way we look at Web Usability.

You are going to create a game UI for a fictitious game you come up with using YOUR art.

  • Art – ANYTHING you have created this year in Blender, Unreal, Illustrator – whatever.

It can also be a combination, so model a UI element for the bottom right in Blender, render out as PNG, and use absolute positioning to place it, and then we can put text over that…

  • UI – Using HTML and CSS you are going to design / build a game UI (that makes sense with your art) that includes:
    • Inventory or Mini map
    • Cursor element in center of the screen, maybe not for shooting – let’s say exploring.
    • A messaging system that says gives the mission objective in text of “Move on to the top of the building” – swap building out for mountain / tree / reef / whatever works for your theme.
    • Extra UI element 1 for your game (what would make sense? Time? Coins? Ammo? (exploring ammo).
    • Extra UI element 2 for your game.
    • Extra UI element 3 for your game.

You will do 3 required elements, and 3 elements of your choosing that make sense with your art and “game”.

Create a folder called “lastNameAccessibleGameUI” for your project to live.

Obviously we are looking for zero errors, contrast errors, OR “negative” alerts using our WAVE took for checking Web Accessibility. We will look at these case by case – ask before you present if questions.

11:30 Study Guide

The Winning Team Trevor (6 min), Mallory (3 min), and Jacob vs. The Field.

  • If The Field wins, everyone has their score minimum cut in half. Show me and go to lunch.
  • If The Field wins, the Winning Team stays until 11:55, but does not have to do the Study Guide.
  • If The Winning Team wins, The Field has to complete the study guide and stay until 11:55.
  • If The Winning Team wins they go to lunch immediately.

11:55 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:30 Steve Jobs

Based on more than forty interviews with Steve Jobs conducted over two years–as well as interviews with more than 100 family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues–Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur

Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.
