10:10 Squash and Stretch

Do you remember the bird we made a month or so back – we madea bird together and we did it using a box model approach (subdivided a cube and used loop cuts). Find that model and if you don’t have one, you can use mine. We’ll use the bird for demonstrating Squash and Stretch – The first animation principle! and we’ll look at some Blender Tools for Deformation.

Like the ball, we’ll work with a control (empty)

Animation Principles – there are 12.

  1. Squash and Stretch
  2. Anticipation
  3. Staging
  4. Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose
  5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action
  6. Slow In and Slow Out
  7. Arcs
  8. Secondary Action
  9. Timing
  10. Exaggeration
  11. Solid Drawing
  12. Appeal

Squash and stretch is one of the most enjoyable of the principles. A nice example in the 2D space. You can really pick up on the personality and appeal of the character.

When we make our bird jump we can add more appeal to the character – we can add a deform modifier to give our character squash, stretch and drag. What’s drag…

Follow-through and overlapping action are usually associated with the animation method of “ drag”, which is the delaying of animated body parts (or accessories) in relation to the animation of the main body. What body parts should we delay?

We’ll perform this Overlapping action and follow through with our bird’s face.

10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)

11:00 Modeling with a Single Vert!

1 Single Vert and it can become a tree – just like a seed. So – let’s try that today and then…. who knows….

If you are not working with visitors, finish the animation by applying some finishing touches with some lights, staging, multiple birds and some nice camera angles.

If you do a great job, I just might put yours up on the Insta! Due for today’s dailies!

11:30 Visitors from Burlington

8 Minute rotations – if you are not working with visitors, you are building out a scene for your animated bird/birds.
