Animation

The Inconvenient Portal

Overview:  A character is trying to get from Point A to Point B, but a second character (“a mischievous helper”) keeps opening new portals that lead to inconvenient or ridiculous locations.

Constraints:  The animation must end exactly where it started (a “loop” feel)

Characters: At least two where one character is “Goal Oriented” and the other character is the “Chaos” one

Judging: Criteria will be based primarily on the Principles of Animation with visual effects and sound effects secondary.

Scaffolding: Each week your team will tackle a project milestone with a set of deliverables. The goal will be to show your progress and development each week. A good plan is essential!

Time: This is your final prompt. You will have until April 16th – UPDATE – APRIL 15th – 11:30AM (Wednesday). A judge will be reviewing your work.

Week 27 – Deliverables

To be submitted on Friday – April 10th by Noon to your Week 27 Folder:

You will not be presenting work to the big group this week.

Last week each animation team shared the “first looks” of the solution animation to the “Invconvenient Portal” challenge. Reviewers had the opportunity to share feedback on the clarity of your story, the portals, the mischievous character and the animation itself. Hearing feedback from others is crucial to revising and improving your quality of work. First Looks does not equal Final Product.

Carefully review the following deliverables as this week the aim of our Skills project is to fix/address issues in a before / after model.

Step 1

  • Evaluate feedback / areas to improve from your feedback forms
  • Pick 3 elements which you as a team think are the most important.
  • Document the 3 problems, You must document the problem as an MP4.
    • (video documents the problem – then shows the solution)
  • Bring into Premiere and use text to demonstrate the issues. Make sure we can read the text and that it looks professional. Show us the issues that people are talking about in the feedback and then the changes(after) that you made.
BEFORE/AFTER of the issue, BEFORE/AFTER of the issue, BEFORE/AFTER of the issue,

Step 2

  • Create your Second Looks video. This second looks should be a step up from last week and should be the full animation that incorporates all the improvements by using the feedback from your testers. Your Second Looks video will be rendered in EEVEE with all audio and materials synced. The goal of the second looks video is to be nearly done.
    • Is your story clear?
    • Why are portals opening
    • Is your character mischievous?
    • Does animation look smooth / are you using any of the 12 principles of animation
    • Do your characters have emotion? Do we care what happens to them?
    • Do you have a perfect loop?
    • Filename: Portal_SecondLooks.mp4

When you finish all deliverables – your team might consider gathering more feedback on your Second Looks video as you prepare for next week.

Most major studio movies are tested two to three times through formal test screenings before release, though some high-stakes films may have more. These screenings allow studios to gauge audience reactions and make adjustments to the edit, sometimes even changing the ending or cutting scenes based on feedback.
